They had to fulfill their household duties and bring up children. Who made this unofficial division of social roles? Where did it start and what is the situation now?

See Graphic Period Pictures Censored By Instagram + Poster's MUST-READ Open Letter

Rupi Kaur, a Sikh poet studying at the University of Waterloo, Canada, posted an image of her during her period as part of her photo-series project for a visual rhetoric course on Instagram. The photo shows Rupi in bed with a patch of menstrual blood which had stained the same sweatpants she's wearing above, and had also leaked on the bedsheet.

The photo was subsequently taken down by Instagram citing violation of the 'Community Guidelines'. Though not outrightly against any overt photo guidelines on Instagram, I imagine several people who saw the photo were offended and reported to the site to take it down, and they did. However, Rupi decided to re-post the photo and wrote a powerful open letter to accompany. See the photo and read her post below...

#HappyInternationalWomensDay - 1923 Teachers Contract Shows Progress For Women

Posted in: ,

Happy #IWD2015 to all women and my fellow feminists. A teacher’s contract from 1923 has recently gone viral on Facebook, and shows how much we have to be happy for. Back then, teaching was primarily a female job and the contract outlines all of the guidelines anyone who signs must follow to keep her job. With the rules being so gender-specific, there is no denying the sexist antecedents that today's working women face.

The contract was posted on Ohio Education Association’s Facebook page, and dictates how the women automatically lost their jobs or had to quit when they got married. The female teachers had to have their clothes a certain length, had to wear two underwears to avoid any manner of looking good. They were also warned not to seek or keep the company of men, not to drink alcohol or smoke, not to dye their hair, not to dress in bright colors. Read below..

The post has since gone viral as commenters flooded the page with condemnation for the writer. The woman known as Lana had the article published on a site called “Injustice Stories”.

Lana says that at the fifth month of her pregnancy, the doctor told her she was having a boy, and decided to have a late-term abortion. This happened some years ago as Lana says she already has a one-year old baby daughter, and will terminate another pregnancy if a boy comes her way. And yet she maintains she doesn't hate men. Catholic Women Organisation President Says Women's Dressing To Blame For Rape?

Posted in: , ,

Ngozi Chukwuji, the President of Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWO), is reported to have said that the way women dress is the leading cause of increases in cases of rape. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), she said that "clothes that expose sensitive areas of the female body provoke sexual urge."

“What we are facing in our society is really amazing, even some of us that are married, the way we dress does not portray us as good mothers or good parents. So, we’ve been talking to our women, if you have a tailor that sews, you should be able to cover your body very well.

“Decency matters, while a lot of rapists are outside, its the way we dress, that attracts these people to us, our manners, our dressing portrays our manners, our dressing brings out the way we are.
